Why Bruno Fernandes Must Be Stripped of the Manchester United Captaincy Before He Destroys the Club Further

Bruno Fernandes wearing the captain’s armband at Manchester United has become a disgrace to everything that role is supposed to stand for. A United captain is meant to embody resilience, authority, and an unshakable will to fight for the badge. Instead, what do we get from Bruno? Sulking, moaning, finger-pointing, and the emotional stability of a toddler throwing a tantrum. It’s embarrassing, it’s toxic, and it has dragged this team down in some of its lowest moments in modern history.

Let’s not pretend this is just about form or a bad patch—this is about character, or rather, the lack of it. The 7-0 humiliation against Liverpool still lives rent-free in the minds of every fan because of how Bruno handled himself. Rather than rallying the players and keeping their heads up, he was whining at the referee, flapping his arms like a street performer, and even signaled to come off the pitch because it was all “too much.” Can you imagine Roy Keane or Nemanja Vidić asking to be subbed off when the club needed leaders? It was cowardice, pure and simple, and it proved once and for all that this man is no captain.

And it wasn’t a one-off meltdown. Whenever United goes behind, Bruno becomes the poster boy of collapse. Instead of lifting teammates, he berates them. Instead of working back to win the ball, he dives or complains. His risky passes gift opponents possession, his temper costs United composure, and his constant moaning creates a cloud of negativity that spreads like a disease on the pitch. He is supposed to be setting the example, but instead, he makes the squad look leaderless, spineless, and mentally weak.

Fast forward to Old Trafford today, where results are inconsistent, the manager is under fire, and the squad looks like it couldn’t fight its way out of a paper bag. In times like these, the captain should be the one binding the cracks, inspiring fight and unity. Instead, Fernandes amplifies the dysfunction with his attitude. He isn’t respected, he isn’t feared, and he damn sure isn’t inspiring anyone. Fans can see it, opponents know it, and you can bet the dressing room feels it.

Manchester United cannot rebuild while keeping Bruno Fernandes as captain. It’s like letting the fox guard the henhouse—madness. Every time he throws his hands up in frustration or wastes a counterattack with a ridiculous shot into Row Z, he’s reminding us all that he’s not cut out for the armband. If United want to bring back standards, accountability, and pride, then the very first move should be ripping that captaincy from his arm. He can stay as a player, fine, but captain? Not a chance. The fact that he still holds the title is proof of just how far this club has fallen.
